Pookie's story

Pookie picture I recently found a book given to me and inscribed Love to Nola for Christmas 1954 from Valerie, Ernest & Graham (my cousins). I was 8 years old. This book, Pookie in Search of a Home inspired the beanie you see before you.

The enchanting story is much like you hear so many times over the years. Happy, hardworking forest dwellers were to find new homes! The developers were going to bulldoze their much loved, cosy abodes . The forest trees were marked by x! These were 5 star forest apartments to many happy families in the hollowed trunk and branches.

Pookie is a magical rabbit with a very strong determination to match his wings. He set out with some of his forest friends to search for new homes. They were extremely disappointed as they found nothing to compare with their cherished, cosy homes which they had worked so hard to perfect.

On the sad journey back to their forest Pookie decided to fly over the developer’s campsite. He had his lantern to show the way in the dark. He saw workmen by their campfire and flew down for a look. This really scared the workmen. Pookie was delighted! He kept on swooping, they were petrified.

This gave him an idea. He called on Ooly Owl and many of the other forest dwellers. The next evening again with his lantern and Ooly Owl they flew close to the workmen’s camp again, this time making weird, chilling noises. Again the men left and the other dwellers filled in all the trenches and hid the workmen’s tools.

Pookie picture Next evening Pookie and friends returned. Pookie captured in a net by the men. They intended tossing him in the river. The forest folk sprang into action - the rabbits made an eerie drumming noise with their back legs. This scared the men out of their wits. They dropped Pookie and hastily drove their nasty machines away, declaring the forest haunted.

Again the forest folk filled in the trenches and returned to their much loved homes feeling total happiness and contentment. If only it was that easy today.... Pookie would be so busy!!
