A V-neck cardigan for a small baby

V-Neck cardigan for small baby

Materials: Approx 50g Opal 4ply sock yarn. Finished item weighs 38g. However, if you want to keep the pattern flowing you will remove some yarn.

Needles: 3.75mm. Garment measures approx 38cm around. If you wish smaller, reduce needle size.

This garment is worked in one piece, so that there are no seams to irritate the small body.

Lower body: Cast on 93 sts, work in garter st for 5 rows, change to stocking st and knitting garter stitch 5sts at each end for 50 rows. (total 55 rows). Making buttonholes on rows 39 and 53.

Right front and sleeves: Knit 25 sts, cast on 18; leave all other sts on a length of spare wool. (I used smaller gauge circular needle). Work 5 more rows on these 43 sts, (still garter stitch 5 sts at cuff side of sleeve) . Start v-neck decreasing each 4th row inside garter st border - 36 rows/35sts. Cast off.

Left front and sleeves: Slip last 25 sts from spare wool/needle onto your knitting needle. Cast on 18, knit to end (keeping your garter stitch border at bottom of sleeve). Work same as right front with neck shaping decreasing inside garter st edge.

Back & sleeves: Slip remaining 43 body sts on to needle. Pick up and knit 18 sts from cast on edge of right sleeve, knit 18sts from cast on edge of left sleeve. (79sts). Knit straight for 36rows (don’t forget garter st border on sleeves). Cast off 32 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Knit 6 rows garter st across remaining sts for back of neck. Cast off.

To complete: Join seams along top of sleeves and garter stitch from v-neck and back.
