Twinset - fitted top

twinset Abbreviations:
RS : right side
WS : wrong side
Edgest.: first and last stitch of a row. You may knit/purl or slip them, just as you wish.
P : purl
K : knit
SSK : slip, slip, knit
St.st : stocking stitch, row 1: knit, row 2: purl. Repeat these 2 rows.
Moss. : moss stitch, row 1: P1, K1 to end, row 2: P1, K1 to end. Repeat these 2 rows.
Materials:
300g Opal KP (100 g = 250 m)
Knitting needles 3,0 or 3,5 mm (you can use larger needles for 8 ply wool)
Crochet hook 3,0 mm
Tension:
23 sts and 34 rows to 10cm measured over stocking stitch.
Notes:
1. Front and back are knitted sideways.
2. If you wish the top to match front and back, you can do so by taking note of the pattern when you begin, regarding colours and dot sequence. Start your second piece at the same colour or dot sequence as you did your first piece. If neccessary pull out the yarn until you have reached the right section.
3. The arrows i the diagrams show the knitting direction.
4. Measurements in the diagrams are without inner hems.
5. For increasing the size, cast on more sts. for the sidepieces.

The arrows in the diagram show the knitting direction, which is from side to side.
Cast on 122 stitches and knit 6 rows (2 cm) as follows: edgest., 4 Moss (for inner hem section), K1 (st.st. this stitch every row), 115 Moss, edgest. Continue as follows: edgest., 4 Moss (for inner hem section), K1(st.st. this stitch every row), 5 Moss (for outer hem section), st.st. 105, 5 Moss (for shoulder hem section), edgest. Continue in this way for the shoulder for 16 rows (4,5 cm. shoulderheight) .

Shape neck
Cast on 5 stitches at the end of the next RS-row (127 st.). These new 5 stitches form the inner neckhem. Knit these in Moss all the way through and st.st. the former edgestitch in every row. Decrease for the neck in every 2nd row 8x by knitting/purling the last knitted stitch together with the 1st Moss. (119 sts.) Work another 28 rows (21 cm) after the last decrease. Increase in the next RS-row 1 stitch by picking up the horizontal loop before the first Moss. and knit into the back of it. Repeat this increase another 7 times in every 2nd row (127 sts). In the next row (WS) cast of the 5 Moss.sts. of the inner neckhem (122 sts) . Make the second shoulder like the first one, but in reverse. Cast of sts.

Front
Work as given for back until the neck. Shape neck. Cast on another 5 stitches at the end of next knit row (127 st.). These new 5 stitches form the inner neckhem. Knit them in Moss. all the way through and st.st. the former edgestitch in every row. Decrease for the neck in every 2nd row 11x by SSK the last knitted stitch together with the 1st Moss. (116 sts.) Work another 16 rows after the last decrease. Increase in the next knit row 1 st. by picking up the horizontal loop before the first Moss. and knit into the back of it. Repeat this increase another 10 times (127 sts.). In the next row (WS) cast of the 5 Moss.es of the inner neckhem (122 sts.).

Side piece (make 2)
This whole piece is knitted in Moss. Cast on 18 sts. in Moss. Cast on more sts. for a larger size. Work 7 rows Moss (2 cm) for the inner hem. Next row: purl. Next row: knit. Continue in Moss. for another 8 rows. Then shape waist as follows: decrease 1 st. at each side of the row 5 x in every following 6th row. (8 sts.) Keep the pattern correct. Work until piece measures 12,5 cm and mark the waist with a coloured thread. Work 10 rows and start increasing as follows. Increase (in pattern) 1 st. at each end of the row by picking up the horizontal loop before the next stitch and knit into the back of it. Repeat these increases 6x in every following 10th row (22 sts.). Work until 23 cm after the marked waistrow. Cast off the stitches.

Making up
Pieces are blocked, misted and left to dry. Join side seams of side pieces with back and front. Join shoulder seams. Fold the inner hem sections at neck and waist to the inside and sew or crothed them in place.

Back (in moss stitch)
The arrows in the diagram show you the knitting direction, which is from side to side.
Cast on 85 sts. with needles 3/3,5 mm and knit in moss stitch as follows: edgest., 4 moss (inner hem section), K1 (st.st. this stitch every row), 78 Moss, edgest. Since you are knitting sideways, you have to increase for armhole immediately.
Shape armhole and shoulder:
Cast on 2 st. at the end of the very 1st row. Cast on 2 x 3 sts. in every following 2nd row, 1 x 4 sts. in the following alt. row. Then cast on 31 sts (128 sts). Continue for the shoulder and work 34 rows(10 cm) in moss. Cast on 5 more sts. (for the inner hem section of the neck) at the end of the next RS row (133 sts.). Knit the new sts. in moss and from now on st.st. the former edgestitch.
Shape neck:
Decrease in the following alt. row 1 stitch by knitting/purling the 2 sts before the st.st.section together. Repeat this decrease 4x in every following 2nd row (128 sts). Continue in pattern. After 62 rows (10,5 cm) after the first decrease start shaping the other side of the neck. Increase 1 st. by picking up the horizontal loop before the st.st. and knit into the back of it. Repeat this increase in every following 2nd row 4x (133 sts). Work 2 rows. Next row (WS) cast of the 5 stitches of the inner hem section (128 sts).

Continue for the shoulder and knit 34 rows (10 cm) in Moss. Cast off in every 2nd row: 1 x 31 sts., 1 x 4 sts., 2 x 3 sts., 1 x 2 sts. Cast off the remaining 85 sts.
Right front
Cast on 85 sts. with needles 3/3,5 mm and knit 6 rows Moss. Since you are knitting sideways, you have to increase for the armhole immediately. Shape the armhole like you did in the back. Afther the 6 rows of Moss. continue as follows: (RS) edgest., 4 moss (inner hem section), K1 (st.st. this stitch every row), 5 Moss (hem section), st.st 82, edgest. In the next WS-row after the last increase (128 sts) work the first 5 st. after the edgest. in Moss for the shoulderhem. (Take care to work the Moss matching those of the inner hem section, because later all sts of the front bands will be in Moss again.) Work the sts. between shoulder and shoulderhem in st.st.
Shoulder en neck:
Work these as in the back, but decrease 2 sts. in every following alt. row for the deeper neckedge (123 sts). Continue until work measures 6 cm after the firs decrease for the neck (20 rows).
Frontband:
Change to needle 2,5 mm. Work in Moss over all the sts. and at the same time cast off the 5 sts of the hem and the neckhem. Work 8 rows in Moss, 2 rows in st.st. and a final 7 rows in Moss. Cast off all sts.
Left front
Like right front, but in reverse.
Side piece (make 2)
Cast on 13 sts and work 7 rows in Moss. 8th row: purl. 9th row: knit. Continue in Moss until work measures 35,5 cm. Cast off.
Sleeves (make 2)
Cast on 50 sts and work 6 rows in Moss (inner hem section). 7th row: purl. 8th row: knit. Work another 6 rows in Moss (outer hem section). Continue in st.st. and increase in the 6th row after the hem at each side of the row 1 st (52 sts). Repeat this increase in 8 x in every following 12th row and 2 x in every 10th row (72 sts).
Shape top:
At 39 cm. after the hem, cast of 6 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 3 x 1 st. at each side in the next 4th row. Decrease 13 x 1 st. at each side in every following 2nd row. Decrease 2 x 3 sts. at each side. Cast off the remaining 14 sts.
MAKING UP:
Join sidepieces with fronts and back. Join shoulderseams. Set in sleeves and close sideseam of sleeve. Fold the inner hem sections at neck, sleeves, waist and fronts to the inside and sew or crothed them in place.
